The Prank That Uncovered a Hidden Goodbye
Adam tucked Clara’s passport behind the old cast-iron radiator with a mischievous grin, already mentally rehearsing his fake indignant reaction for when she discovered his little trick. It was meant to be nothing more than a lighthearted, harmless prank ahead of their much-anticipated weekend getaway. But the moment he turned and walked back into the main living area, Clara was nowhere to be seen, and the entire apartment was engulfed in an eerie, unnatural silence that sent a tiny chill down his spine.
He pulled out his phone immediately and dialed her number, fully expecting her familiar ringtone to chime out followed by her half-amused, half-exasperated sigh. Instead, the call diverted straight to her voicemail without a single ring. He tried dialing again, his brow lifting in mild confusion. Still no connection—her line was completely unreachable. Her winter coat was no longer hanging on the entryway hook, yet a handful of her casual t-shirts and her favorite toothbrush still sat untouched in their usual spots. A strange, uneasy feeling settled heavy in his gut, telling him something was terribly wrong.
